Illinois-Minnesota preview

So far this season, Illinois football’s main problem has been on offense. The Illini are averaging 18.8 points per game, which ranks 120th in the country and easily at the bottom of the Big Ten.

Sophomore Jeff George Jr. has gotten the start in Illinois’ last two games, in which he’s thrown for 554 yards while posting two touchdowns and five interceptions. Overall, he is 54-for-105 with 765 passing yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions on the season.

There’s no denying the Illinois passing attack has looked bleak so far this season, but the hope is George Jr. can continue to grow with experience.

The run game has been a little more promising for the Illini, as freshman running back Mike Epstein is averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Still, if the Illini are going to pull off an upset, they’re clearly going to need to show a gear on offense they have not been able to reliably achieve this season.

The Minnesota offense is averaging 27.8 points per game, the No. 77 mark in the country, while the defense is yielding 19.3 points per game. (25th). The Golden Gophers have shown a balanced offensive attack so far this season, evident by their 177.5 passing yards and 170.7 rushing yards per game.

Conor Rhoda has been the starting quarterback for much of the season, throwing for 839 yards, 5 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. But in the second quarter against Michigan State, quarterback  Demry Croft came into the game due to Rhoda’s ineffectiveness. Croft through for 3 fourth-quarter touchdowns in his team’s loss to the Spartans. Overall, he completed 11 of his 20 throws for 163 yards and the 3 passing scores. He also rushed the ball 7 times for 31 yards.
