Donte' Starks-Florida recruiting-Florida-class of 2019

Join us here at SEC Country for a daily recap of the latest Florida recruiting news, tales from the trail, and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.

LB Donte’ Starks gives the latest

One of the nation’s top linebackers will be hitting the road this spring to check out a trio of SEC programs.

Donte’ Starks, a 4-star linebacker from Marrero, La., announced Tuesday that he will take a two-day trip to Florida on April 12-13. He received an offer from Florida coach Dan Mullen on Dec. 23 and has interest in the Gators.

“Florida has always been a great program,” Starks told SEC Country. “I think Dan Mullen will do great with that program. I’ll definitely be paying close attention to them this season.”

Gators running backs coach Greg Knox handles Louisiana for Mullen and has been serving as Starks’ primary recruiter. He’s selling the top-40 overall prospect on Florida’s 3-4 defense.

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Starks is ranked the nation’s No. 2 inside linebacker and No. 37 overall recruit in the Class of 2019 by 247Sports.

“He just loves my style of play. He believes I fit well in their system at Florida,” Starks said of his conversations with Knox. “I’m just ready to get there and feel the atmosphere and view the city and campus.”

Starks holds more than 20 scholarship offers, including Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan and Oklahoma. He named LSU his top school in January, but is in the early stages of his recruitment.

“I have a top 10 that I’m focusing on. I just never released it publicly, so be looking for that soon,” Starks said. “I can see myself leaving the state if another school has everything to offer that I’m looking for. I have to make my decision that’s best for me.

“I’m going to still talk it over with my family, but at the end of the day I have to be at the school for four years. LSU is leading, but I’m focusing on these other nine schools and see how they all compare so I can start making my cuts.”

Starks has scheduled trips to Auburn (March 24) and Texas A&M (March 29). It will his second visit to the Plains.

“Auburn is looking for a linebacker to come in and play immediately for the Class of 2019. They’ll need depth,” Starks said of the Tigers. “I went up there for their junior day and Coach Travis Williams showed me and my family a real good time.

“With Texas A&M, Jimbo Fisher did an incredible job in the ACC, so I see him bringing that same competitiveness to the Aggies. I can’t wait to meet him.”

LB Mohamoud Diabate visits Florida

Another out-of-state linebacker target for the Gators reportedly made a visit to campus Wednesday.

Mohamoud Diabate, a 4-star recruit from Auburn, Ala., unofficially visited Florida after checking out Florida State on Tuesday. He received an offer from the Gators on Jan. 10 and Wednesday was his first time visiting Gainesville.

SEC Country will have more from Diabate’s trip this week. He is ranked the nation’s No. 14 outside linebacker and No. 191 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite.
