AUBURN, Ala. — The start of bowl practices usually shines a spotlight on a group of players who weren’t talked about much during the regular season — the redshirting freshmen.

Under Gus Malzahn, Auburn has used the first few bowl practices on campus to give more work to its younger players, whether they played on the scout team or are enrolling early.

That hasn’t changed in 2017. On Sunday, Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele highlighted several freshmen who didn’t see the field this fall. Those lists included the likes of center Nick Brahms, offensive tackle Calvin Ashley, defensive tackle Alec Jackson and athlete JaTarvious Whitlow.

With the regular season in the books and coaches talking about a few players who redshirted in 2017, let’s look at how many players should be redshirt freshmen next season for the Tigers.

In college football, a single play can wipe away a redshirt status. Players can get medical redshirts if they fall under a certain limit of plays for the season, but Auburn doesn’t have any of those situations — such as Malik Miller in 2016 — this year.

This isn’t an official list from Auburn, so actual redshirt information won’t be known until the Tigers release their 2018 spring roster. But we can figure out which of Gus Malzahn’s freshmen were held out for this reason.

Here’s a look at the 11 scholarship freshmen who did not see the field this year and would be eligible to take 2017 as a redshirt season:

  • OT Calvin Ashley
  • DB Malcolm Askew
  • OL Nick Brahms
  • K Anders Carlson
  • OL Brodarious Hamm
  • DT Alec Jackson
  • DT Tashawn Manning
  • HB/TE John Samuel Shenker
  • LS Bill Taylor
  • OT Austin Troxell
  • RB/WR JaTarvious Whitlow

Thanks to the large amount of veterans on its offensive line, Auburn was able to redshirt its talented freshman class up front in 2017 — including blue-chip signees Ashley, Brahms and Troxell. All three will have opportunities to compete for starting jobs in 2017.

Auburn also has eight freshmen walk-ons who did not play a single snap in 2017. The Tigers will most likely redshirt these players as well. Walk-ons such as Josh French, Devin Guice and Pace Ozmint were listed as redshirt freshmen in 2017 after joining the program in 2016.

  • QB Wil Appleton
  • LB Tanner Dean
  • OL Phelps Gambill
  • K/P Beau Horn
  • OL Trent Kelley
  • FB Alex Medary
  • OL Peyton Nance
  • LB Barrett Tindall

Finally, for those interested, here are the final regular season stats for the true freshmen who played for Auburn in 2017:
