ANSWER: There’s quite a bit of conjecture in this tweet, Manfro. Let’s start with the quarterback situation as it’s currently positioned by scholarship players. Sophomore Nate Stanley is the unquestioned starter. Junior Tyler Wiegers is the backup. Sophomore Ryan Boyle is third, followed by freshman Peyton Mansell, who is redshirting. Sophomore Ryan Schmidt and freshman Tommy Herion are non-scholarship quarterbacks.

Iowa offered 4-star quarterback Spencer Petras, who visited campus last weekend but apparently has decided to stay with his Oregon State commitment. Thus far, the Hawkeyes have no committed quarterbacks for the early signing period.

Let’s say your doomsday scenario takes place with Wiegers, who is slated to graduate and decides to play his one remaining year somewhere else. Then Boyle, who was a two-time state champion at West Des Moines Dowling, opts to leave after the Pinstripe Bowl. That leaves Stanley and Mansell as the only scholarship quarterbacks on the 2018 roster with Schmidt and Herion in reserve. Schmidt, who played football at nearby Linn-Mar, was the third quarterback against Nebraska last month.

I’d say if that happens, Iowa will push hard to sign a fall-back quarterback in January. But I doubt both backup quarterbacks leave. Iowa has quite a fight on its hands for 2019 quarterback Max Duggan of Council Bluffs (Iowa) Lewis Central. With Georgia, Ohio State and Penn State already offering Duggan a scholarship, the battle for the junior quarterback has expanded beyond Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska and Minnesota. That’s more of a priority for the Hawkeyes than the 2018 depth chart.
