How frenzy of NFL quarterback movement could affect Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield is probably watching the recent frenzy of quarterback movement in the NFL closely.

With the start of free agency this week and the draft approaching next month, many teams are trying to solidify their quarterback situations through signings or trades. Those moves will inevitably affect the possible landing spots for the draft’s top quarterback prospects, including Mayfield.

Here’s how the latest moves involving quarterbacks may affect which teams pursue the former Oklahoma quarterback.

Cleveland Browns: Traded for Tyrod Taylor; Hold picks No. 1, No. 4

The Browns recently brought in Tyrod Taylor and traded away DeShone Kizer after his rookie season, so they’re looking for answers at quarterback. Mayfield was scheduled to meet with them after the combine, which means there is mutual interest.

However, Cleveland may also plan to use Taylor as a temporary solution and draft a passer with more raw potential who may take more time to develop, such as Josh Allen from Wyoming. Browns general manager John Dorsey is also on record saying he believes in hand size as a metric when evaluating quarterbacks. Mayfield’s hand size was the smallest of the top quarterbacks at the combine.

New York Giants: Hold pick No. 2

The Giants have yet to make a move at quarterback this offseason, which means drafting one is a possibility. However, they have Eli Manning on the roster, so whoever they draft will probably have to sit a season or two.

Mayfield was scheduled to meet with the Giants after the combine. He also fits a similar profile to Case Keenum, whom Pat Shurmur coached to great success in Minnesota.

Chances of drafting Mayfield: Steady

Denver Broncos: Agreed to deal with Case Keenum; Hold pick No. 5

Speaking of Case Keenum, he has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with Denver. However, the Broncos have shown interest in Mayfield and  are going to his pro day, as well as Josh Rosen’s. Mayfield is in play here.

Chances of drafting Mayfield: Steady

New York Jets: Hold pick No. 6

The Jets are another team Mayfield was expected to meet with after the combine. Most analysts expect them to take a quarterback, and they are a popular projection for Mayfield. Keep an eye on this option.

Miami Dolphins: Hold pick No. 11

Miami has emerged as a popular projected landing spot for Mayfield after the combine. The Dolphins haven’t made a move at quarterback yet, and the moves by teams higher in the draft order could cause Mayfield to fall to their pick.

Arizona Cardinals: Agreed to deal with Sam Bradford; Hold pick No. 15

The Cardinals just signed another former Oklahoma quarterback, Sam Bradford, to a one-year deal with an optional second year. He’s a short-term solution, so Arizona will likely be looking to draft a quarterback in the first or second round. If Mayfield falls to this point in the draft, it’s hard to see the Cardinals passing on him, but it’s not a guarantee that he stays on the board that long.

Chances of drafting Mayfield: Steady

Minnesota Vikings: Agreed to deal with Kirk Cousins; Hold pick No. 30

Minnesota let Keenum walk in free agency, but  has agreed to terms with the No. 1 free-agent quarterback on the market. There seemed to be almost no chance Mayfield would last until the 30th pick in the first round. Now that the Vikings have Kirk Cousins, they are surely out of the running to draft one in the first round.

Chances of drafting Mayfield: Zero
