Georgia Tech-Miami preview

The winner of the Georgia Tech-Miami matchup will be all alone in first place of the ACC Coastal Division standings.

Georgia Tech is 3-1 overall and 2-0 in ACC play, while Miami is 4-0 overall and 2-0 in ACC play. (Virginia, which is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, is the only other undefeated team in the division).

Georgia Tech has won three straight games since it’s 42-41 double-overtime loss to Tennessee in its season opener, defeating Jacksonville State, Pitt and North Carolina by a combined score of 105-34.

“We’re probably, at this point, have been a little better defensively than we were a year ago but we haven’t played against some really good teams so hopefully that will continue when we start to play some teams with better offenses,” Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson told reporters at his weekly press conference. “I think that we’re still a little bit of an enigma. Usually, you know by this time of the year but we’ve only played four games and we’ve played, other than the first game, which we kind of gift-wrapped and gave away, we’ve kind of got out front and picked up some pretty good wins. We’ll find out. We’ll know a lot more after Saturday, that’s for sure.”

The Yellow Jackets are second nationally in rushing yardage per game (396) and 20th in total yardage per game (479.3) with quarterback TaQuon Marshall and running back KirVonte Benson leading the way.

Marshall has rushed for 523 yards and 9 touchdowns, both team highs, while also throwing for 333 yards and 4 scores. Benson has rushed for 476 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per carry, and 4 touchdowns.

Miami, which has won nine straight games going back to last season, enters this contest averaging 37 points and 472 total yards per game but will be without a key contributor in running back Mark Walton.

Walton, who will miss the remainder of the season because of an ankle injury, had rushed for a team-high 428 yards through the first four games, averaging 7.6 yards per carry and scoring 3 touchdowns. He also caught 7 passes for 91 yards, giving him 519 total yards.

Next up at that spot will be Travis Homer, who has rushed for 212 yards, averaging an eye-popping 8.5 yards per carry, and 3 touchdowns. He has 5 catches for 71 yards.

Quarterback Malik Rosier has completed 58.2 percent of his passes for 1,074 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, and has run for 126 yards and 2 scores.

Wide receiver Braxton Berrios has 18 receptions for 282 yards and 5 touchdowns. Ahmmon Richards, who has been battling a hamstring injury, has 7 catches for 174 yards and 1 touchdown in limited action.
