Former USC LB Osa Masina has accepted a plea deal in his felony rape case, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
Masina, 20, pleaded guilty to 3 charges of sexual battery during a hearing on Thursday morning in Salt Lake City. He was scheduled to stand trial next week on a first-degree felony charge of rape and two other first-degree felony charges. Each of those felony charges could have resulted in a potential maximum sentence of life in prison.
A 19-year-old woman said Masina raped her while she was drunk at a party in July of 2016. Masina has claimed the sex was consensual. As part of the plea deal, Masina acknowledged that he “touched [the victim’s] breast and buttocks in a matter that he should have known would have caused her affront or alarm.”
After pleading guilty to the lesser charges, Masina could have face a maximum of 3 years in prison if he served the potential sentences consecutively. He will be sentenced in December. Masina said only “no comment” to reporters outside the courtroom, per the Salt Lake Tribune.
Masina was removed from the USC football team in September of 2016.
