Former Florida coach Steve Spurrier tells story of how Gators hired Bob Stoops as DC

Steve Spurrier and Bob Stoops coached together for three seasons from 1996-98 at Florida. However, that may not have happened had it not been for an extraordinary effort by Spurrier.

Before Stoops joined the Gators, he was serving as co-defensive coordinator at Kansas State under head coach Bill Snyder. Spurrier wanted to call Stoops to talk to him about joining Florida’s staff, but Snyder wouldn’t let the Gators’ coach get in touch.

“I tried to call Bobby, and I called Coach Snyder first,” Spurrier said on ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM on Thursday morning. “And Coach Snyder wouldn’t let me talk to him.”

However, that didn’t deter Spurrier. He just tried to call Stoops and told the secretary that he was Lawson Holland, a coach on Spurrier’s staff at the time.

“He gets on the phone and says, ‘Hey Lawson, what’s happening?'” Spurrier said. “So that’s how I got to talk to him. I had to use a little espionage to get to him. Coach Snyder wasn’t going to let me talk to him, I called him about three times.”

The Gators went 32-5 during the three seasons that Stoops coached under Spurrier.
