Former Alabama QB Greg McElroy on Crimson Tide: ‘Who have they beaten?’

When Greg McElroy was the starting quarterback at Alabama, the Crimson Tide won the national championship. In his senior season, the Tide beat six ranked opponents, including their victory over Texas in the Rose Bowl to earn the BCS title.

This year, Alabama could win another national championship. But McElroy showed a little bit of skepticism on WJOX 94.5 on Monday, questioning where the Tide stands at this point.

“We really don’t know what to make of them. Who have they beaten?” said McElroy, who now works as an analyst for SEC Network. “I’m constantly defending Alabama around the office, where I stand right now, everybody here is kind of an Alabama antagonist. …

“They do bring up a very real point saying, ‘Well, we’re all sitting here saying Alabama is head and shoulders better than everybody, but their resume doesn’t necessarily indicate that.'”

The Crimson Tide’s only victory over a ranked opponent came against then-No. 3 Florida State in the season opener. However, the Seminoles are now 2-4 and currently unranked.

Alabama has rolled through most of SEC play with its only close game coming against Texas A&M on Oct. 7 — a 27-19 victory.

As McElroy points out, there will be a better understanding of where the Crimson Tide stands after playing No. 23 LSU on Nov. 4. They also have a tougher matchup at No. 19 Auburn on Nov. 25.
