Florida State recruiting: 3-star QB target decommits from Tennessee

Florida State has been searching for answers at quarterback in the 2018 cycle for nearly a year.

New coach Willie Taggart extended on offer to 3-star Tampa Bay [Fla.] Tech passer Michael Penix earlier this week.

The 6-foot-1.5, 182-pound field general, who rates as the nation’s No. 20 pro-style quarterback and the No. 530 player overall, had been committed to Tennessee since April.

He was supposed to take an official visit to Knoxville this weekend, but after speaking the new Volunteers staff on Wednesday, Penix decided to reopen his recruitment.

The move comes just days before Penix is scheduled to sign in the early signing period next week and be an early enrollee at the school of his choice.

Now that he is back on the open market, could he be in the Seminoles plans?

It certainly appears that way, but Indiana and South Florida are two other schools in the mix with Penix at this time.

Taggart made an in-home visit with Penix on Monday, and with a weekend slot now open, he could push to get Penix on campus this weekend.

Over the last two seasons, Penix amassed a 20-4 record as the Titans starter. According to MaxPreps, he threw for 4,243 yards with 61 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions in that span. He also added 649 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns on the ground.

Even if he doesn’t visit this weekend, Penix is not unfamiliar with Florida State’s campus.

He took part in a summer camp workout last summer and attended a junior day earlier this year, according to 247Sports.

If he does select the Seminoles, it’s likely they would likely still continue to recruit 4-star Montomgery [Ala.] Lanier quarterback James Foster — who appears to be the only other realistic target on the board at this time.

If he heads elsewhere, it’s likely that the quarterback board expands to other options at the position.
