Florida State recruiting: Seminoles lose commitment from 3-star DE Stacy Kirby

With the transition period at Florida State changing coaches from Jimbo Fisher to Willie Taggart, the Seminoles recruiting efforts figured to undergo its share of changes as well.

The Seminoles lost 7 commitments in the 2018 class in the time period beginning just days before Fisher left and ending in the days before Taggart arrived.

On Monday, the Seminoles suffered another decommitment when 3-star Orlando [Fla.] Jones defensive end Stacy Kirby announced that he was reopening his recruitment.

The 6-foot-3, 248-pound in-state pass rusher committed to Florida State back in February and had remained firm throughout the process.

However, it appears as if the decision to move in another direction was a mutual one between he and the Seminoles. Kirby stated in his announcement that he still plans to sign with a school on Dec. 20 and be an early enrollee at the school of his choice.

The loss of Kirby leaves Florida State with just one player — 3-star Zephyrhills [Fla.] Wesley Chapel defensive end Chaz Neal — committed at a position of need.

With Taggart coming in and a new staff likely to be brought on board in the coming weeks, who the Seminoles will turn to at defensive end remains a bit of a mystery.

With that in mind, the board is likely to expand at several positions — including  defensive end.

Still, there are two players that could be worth monitoring in the immediate future.

One player Taggart is familiar with is 4-star Seffner [Fla.] Armwood defensive end Malcolm Lamar — who is currently committed to Oregon.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Sunshine State defender committed to the Ducks in August. While he doesn’t yet have a Florida State offer, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that change soon.

Another thing Taggart could do is look to the JUCO ranks for immediate help. One player who could fit the bill there is 3-star Arizona Western College defensive end Azur Kamara.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Arizona native rates as the nation’s No. 8 weakside defensive end and the No. 64 player overall in the JUCO rankings. He placed the Seminoles in his top 5 recently, along with Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss and Utah.

Even if it’s not Kamara, don’t be surprised if the Seminoles make a push for other JUCO prospects along the defensive line.

Either way, it appears as if the defensive end board is undergoing a complete reset, and the news with Kirby seems to confirm that line of thinking.
