Houston Griffith speaks on commitment, who he wants to join him at Florida State

Now that his recruitment is over, 4-star cornerback Houston Griffith is already thinking about his future at Florida State.

The 6-foot-1, 192-pound Chicago native and Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy star, who rates as the Class of 2018’s No. 10 corner and the No. 61 overall recruit per the 247Sports composite, committed to the Seminoles on Sunday following his official visit to Florida State for the Miami game last Saturday.

And he’s already put his recruiter hat on for the Seminoles, targeting three players he hopes join him in Tallahassee.

“I’m targeting [4-star receiver and current Nebraska commit] Josh Moore, [4-star receiver] Jaylen Waddle and [4-star defensive tackle Bobby] Tre Brown,” Griffith told Florida State DieHards. “I just told Jaylen and Tre that things aren’t going well right now, but you can’t win every game. It’s just a lesson they are learning right now and next year they will be ready to go. We are just really excited for the future.”

Waddle and Brown both also took their official visits to Florida State last weekend while Moore and Griffith were at one time teammates at IMG Academy.

As for his own plans, Griffith will be an early enrollee at Florida State — arriving in Tallahassee and enrolling in January and going through spring practice.

While Griffith lines up at corner at IMG Academy, the Seminoles defensive staff values his versatility and his ability to play anywhere in the secondary. As to where he will start out his college career, Griffith said the current plan is to get on campus and figure out where he’s needed most and go from there.

Regardless of where he lines up, one of his main goals is to make an immediate impact for the Seminoles beginning in 2018.

“One of my goals is to play as a freshman and to be a freshman All-American and an Academic All-American,” Griffith said. “I just want to be a part of something special and help the team in the future and contribute as a player and continue to develop my game as well and take it to the next level.”

Top 2018 CB names top 3 — and Seminoles make cut

Another priority corner target for the Seminoles down the stretch is 4-star Baton Rouge [La.] Scotlandville Magnet standout Kelvin Joseph.

Joseph rates as the nation’s No. 8 corner, the No. 3 player from Louisiana and the No. 49 player overall in the 2018 cycle.

The 6-1.5, 191-pound Joseph was committed to hometown power LSU for more than a year before reopening his recruitment last week.

Fresh off that announcement, he took his first official visit to Florida State last weekend for the Miami game.

As Josh Newberg of Noles247 detailed, Joseph thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Tallahassee and placed Florida State in his top 3, along with Alabama and LSU. As Newberg noted, Joseph is still considering taking visits to Alabama, Auburn and Georgia and will make a final decision on National Signing Day.

Florida State already has five defensive backs committed to the 2018 class — including a trio of corners in Griffith and fellow 4-star corners A.J. Lytton and Asante Samuel Jr.

The Seminoles are still pursuing players such as Joseph and 5-star Fort Lauderdale [Fla.] American Heritage corners Tyson Campbell and Patrick Surtain Jr.

For now, it appears as if Florida State has positioned itself to be a factor in Joseph’s recruitment for the next few months.

4-star DT enjoys official visit to Florida State

Keeping with the theme of official visitors from last weekend, another somewhat new name to the Florida State recruiting board is 4-star Arlington (Texas) Lamar defensive tackle Bobby “Tre” Brown.

The 6-4, 275-pound Lone Star State standout rates as the nation’s No. 14 defensive tackle and the No. 153 player overall in the 2018 cycle.

Brown has a final 5 of Alabama, Florida State, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M. He’s scheduled to make his commitment on Nov. 2.

He took his first official visit to Oklahoma last month and his second visit was to Tallahassee.

Brown commented on the trip via his Twitter account, and it’s clear that he enjoyed his time on Florida State’s campus thanks to tight ends coach Tim Brewster and the time he spent with freshman defensive tackle and Texas native Marvin Wilson.

Before he makes his scheduled commitment, he has remaining visits left to Alabama on Oct. 20 and Texas A&M on Oct. 27.

The Crimson Tide are the current favorites on his 247Sports Crystal Ball page, but the latest buzz seems to be pointing in favor of the Aggies to keep him in-state.

It remains to be seen whether the Seminoles gave him something to think about with respect to his final decision. Still, at the very least, it appears as if Florida State’s staff has set the foundation to recruit him aggressively until he makes a final decision.
