Willy Taggart has officially made the first outside hire of his tenure as Florida State head coach.
Tomahawk Nation reported Wednesday that the Seminoles have hired Oregon State running backs coach Telly Lockette to the same position. Lockette will fill in for Jay Graham, who followed Jimbo Fisher when Fisher left Florida State for Texas A&M.
Lockette has ties to both Florida and Taggart, and he should help the Seminoles’ in-state recruiting efforts. Lockette won three state titles as an assistant at Miami Northwester High School and as the head coach at Miami Central High School. Lockette also coached running backs for three seasons under Taggart at South Florida. During that time, Marlon Mack became the school’s first-ever 1,000 yard rusher in 2014.
Lockette is the first assistant hired by Taggart who neither coached under him at Oregon or under Fisher at Florida State. Taggart has already announced that defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt will follow him to Tallahassee from Oregon.
