Florida QB Michael Penix de-commits from Tennessee

Tennessee got great news Wednesday morning when Alontae Taylor committed, then bad news in the afternoon.

Quarterback commit Michael Penix announced on Twitter he has de-committed from Tennessee.

Penix had been solidly committed to the Vols since April. He took only one other official this season which was to Indiana.

From the note in the tweet, it seems the new coaching staff pushed Penix out the door more than him wanting to be de-committed.

The lefty from Tampa Bay, Fla., received an offer from Florida State on Monday.

Penix rates as a 3-star prospect and ranks as the No. 20 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2018, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Tennessee now holds 11 commitments in the Class of 2018. At one time it was the top-ranked class in the SEC.

The Vols hold one quarterback commitment in Adrian Martinez. Nebraska is making a big push for Martinez, though, and trending in the right direction.

Coach Jeremy Pruitt is putting his stamp on the class. He obviously did not think some of the prospects the previous staff was high on fits into the new system.

This was the third de-commitment of the week for Tennessee. All of which were more the coaching changing directions, not the prospects.
