Florida commit Dameon Pierce enrolling early, encouraged by Malik Davis

As Jim McElwain tries to rebuild Florida football into a championship program, one of his mottos is “recruit daily or die.” Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the  latest Florida recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.

Dameon Pierce enrolling early

More than half of Florida’s 2018 class attended its homecoming game against LSU, including top-200 overall prospect Dameon Pierce.

The 4-star running backs from Bainbridge, Ga., visited Saturday for the third time since committing to the Gators on Aug. 6. The purpose of his latest trip?

“We come down here to hang out. It was homecoming and we came to have a little fun,” Pierce said. “ Matt Corral and Jacob Copeland, those are my boys. We go way back. We were just getting familiar with some of the players we’re going to be around for the next couple of years and just having a friendship. … I just had a good time down here.”

Pierce will be back for more home games and plans to enroll early at Florida. He also won’t visit any other schools this fall.

Not even nearby Florida State, one of Pierce’s finalists.

“Nah,” he said when asked. “With me, it’s being comfortable. I feel comfortable and I feel at home with this place. My mom likes it. My family likes it. Most people might not like the Florida Gators because they’re FSU fans or whatever, but they like the decision I made. It’s a great decision overall and it feels good. I’m comfortable with it.”

As for the game Saturday, Pierce liked what Florida tried to do offensively and believes UF coach Jim McElwain will improve the unit. The nation’s No. 9-ranked running back also likes how the Gators are using true freshman Malik Davis, who has 409 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns through the first half of the regular season.

“I’m always impressed by what I see,” Pierce said of Florida’s rushing attack. “It was well run, but little mistakes every now and again. Just came up short. It’s nothing that can’t be fixed. Knowing Coach Mac, he’ll fix that asap and they’ll get back rolling.

“Coach [Ja’Juan] Seider says I have potential to get rotated in, but seeing Malik doing things as a freshman just makes me want to follow in his footsteps and do the same thing.”
