Federal documents released on Friday have the college basketball world all worked up with concern about what happens next.
Yahoo! Sports’ Pat Forde and Pete Thamel unveiled a look at documents and bank records that could implicate many high-profile college basketball players– both from the present and past– in receiving improper benefits. The report takes a look at Federal documents obtained on the “expenditures of prominent former NBA agent Andy Miller, his former associate Christian Dawkins and his agency, ASM Sports.”
Among those mentioned were Kentucky star Kevin Knox and former Kentucky players Bam Adebayo and Nerlens Noel.
Knox is listed among those who had dinner with the agency. While there’s technically nothing wrong with meeting with an agency, the issue becomes who paid for the meal and whether it constitutes improper benefits.
Forde and Thamel consulted Atlanta-based lawyer Stu Brown, who has represented schools and coaches in NCAA compliance cases in the past, about the agent meetings.
“There’s nothing wrong with meeting with an agent,” said Atlanta-based lawyer Stu Brown, a veteran of representing schools and coaches in NCAA compliance cases. “But then it becomes a question of who pays for the meal.”
Knox’s involvement in meals, and whether or not his eligibility could be hindered as a result, is just part of the potential problems presented for Kentucky in the latest findings.
Two more former Wildcats showed up on the documents. A balance sheet ending with the date of Dec. 31, 2015 showed loans as big as five figures being issued to NCAA basketball players across the country.
Among those were Adebayo and Noel.
The name “BAM” is listed on a document that indicated a loan was given in the amount of $12,000. The listing is later identified as Edrice “Bam” Adebayo. Adebayo’s name was referenced as a “bad loan” for $36,500. He did not sign with the agency after finishing his playing career at Kentucky in 2017.
Noel is listed for a “loan to player” at the amount of $4,350.
SEC Country’s Kyle Tucker reached out to Kentucky on Friday morning, but the university did not immediately comment.
