Fans helped former Vanderbilt QB Johnny McCrary raise money for pro showcase opportunity

Here’s a cool story involving former Vanderbilt quarterback Johnny McCrary.

Recently, the former SEC player started a GoFundMe page to raise the $650 required to participate in the HBCU Spirit of America Bowl, which is an all-star game for players from historically black colleges and universities that allows them to appear before professional football scouts. McCrary made the $650 his goal, and fans answered the call in a huge way. By Sunday afternoon, $1,930 were raised.

Many of the 49 people who had donated by Sunday afternoon are Vanderbilt fans who hadn’t forgotten about McCrary. Check out the note that accompanied his GoFundMe campaign:

Hey I’m Johnathon Mccrary and I’m trying to raise enough money to go to the Spirit of America Bowl. At this bowl I will finally get the opportunity to participate in the NFL/CFL combines and practice in front of NFL/CFL scouts. It’s been my dream to play professional football but without support it’s just too hard. After losing both of my parents, my mother to a car accident and my father from natural causes, I’ve been relying upon my sister, brother, churches, uncles, friends, mentors, and myself. Unfortunately, as a substitute teacher and a graduate student at CAU, my time and resources have been exhausted. Help me shock the world!

So heart-warming, right?

McCrary threw for 2,518 yards with 15 touchdowns and 20 interceptions with the Commodores during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

As detailed by Christian D’Andrea of, McCrary graduated from Vanderbilt in three years and left the school because of personal issues (his father passed way in 2015), combined with the Commodores moving on from him with the team’s depth-chart situation. He went to Clark Atlanta University, where he did well enough to earn the HBCU Spirit of America Bowl invite this year. But because of his status as a grad student, money to register for the event was difficult to come by, and he turned to his GoFundMe campaign for help.

Kudos to all involved for helping McCrary reach his goal.
