SI expert panel predicts West Virginia to defeat Utah in Heart of Dallas Bowl

Sports Illustrated likes West Virginia football’s chances of taking home a trophy this bowl season.

Four of the seven Sports Illustrated college football experts picked the Mountaineers to defeat Utah in the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl. The game will be played at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas on Tuesday, Dec. 26.

West Virginia and Utah have only faced each other one — way back in 1964. The Utes prevailed over the Mountaineers, 32-6. The game was played in Atlantic City, N.J.

West Virginia was without starting quarterback Will Grier for its final game of the 2017 season vs. Oklahoma after the junior suffered a hand injury against Texas on Nov. 18. Grier underwent surgery following the injury and was uncertain if he could return for the bowl game.

The Mountaineers’ most recent bowl game victory came in January 2016. West Virginia posted a 43-42 victory over Arizona State in the Cactus Bowl.
