ESPN projects USC to play in Holiday Bowl

The USC Trojans came into the 2017 season with high expectations and little room for error. However, after the Trojans’ 49-14 loss at Notre Dame, the team and its fan base are forced to re-evaluate what success looks like this season.

The No. 21 Trojans are still 6-2 and 4-1 in Pac-12 play. The team is still in first place in the Pac-12 South and has a good shot at making it to the Pac-12 title game. While a Pac-12 Championship likely won’t result in a trip to the Rose Bowl (due to its participation in the College Football Playoff), it would still be a huge achievement for a team that has struggled through a tough year.

ESPN’s most recent bowl projections, which were released Sunday, have the Trojans playing in the Holiday Bowl. The two writers were split on which Big 10 team USC would face: Northwestern or Michigan?

Hale: USC vs. Michigan

While the Holiday Bowl isn’t part of the New Year’s Six bowls, it is a prestigious bowl game in its own right. Plus, the thought of USC taking on Michigan in Southern California is pretty intriguing.

The Trojans can still play their way into a New Year’s Six bowl. If USC is able to win the Pac-12 title game, they would likely play in either the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas or the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.

USC needs to bounce back this week as they take on a red-hot Arizona State team on the road. The Trojans and Sun Devils will kick off at 7:45 p.m. PT on ESPN.
