ESPN college football writer Alex Scarborough came out with a list on Monday identifying eight players who will be in contention for the 2018 Heisman Trophy. And while Florida State running back Cam Akers wasn’t one of them, his name popped up in the “Five more to keep an eye on” section.
Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor is the only running back to appear on the initial list of eight, while Clemson’s Kelly Bryant is the only ACC player to appear.
Akers has been solid as a freshman, running for 930 yards and 7 touchdowns. He’s averaging 5.1 yards per carry, and ran for 117 yards and 2 scores in his last outing against Louisiana Monroe.
The numbers are particularly impressive considering how poor Florida State’s offensive line play has been this year. With new head coach Willie Taggart in the mix, Akers will likely see even more work in 2018. Oregon running back Royce Freeman ran for 1,475 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.
Florida State fans would love to see a breakout performance from Akers next season.
