ESPN analyst Jay Williams says Keenan Evans ‘has to be the leader for Texas Tech to win Big 12 title

Texas Tech senior guard Keenan Evans has hit a bit of a wall as of late.

After previously averaging 24.6 points per game throughout a six-game stretch from Jan. 23 to Feb. 13, the Red Raiders star point guard has cooled considerably as of late.

Throughout his past two games against Baylor and Oklahoma State, Evans was a combined 2-of-13 from the field, totaling just 6 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists; a substantial regression from his season average of 17.6 points, 3.3 assists and 3 rebounds per game.

Consequently, after climbing to the very top of the Big 12 standings at 22-4 (10-3), No. 6 Texas Tech is now 22-6 (10-5) after back-to-back losses, and trails No. 8 Kansas (22-6, 11-4) by one game in the Big 12. For Texas Tech to reclaim its position atop the Big 12, as the Red Raiders would own the season sweep over the Jayhawks, Evans simply must return to his previous form.

As ESPN College GameDay analyst Jay Williams noted on SportsCenter on Saturday morning, he’s confident in Evans’ potential to do just that.

“He just needs to be a leader,” Williams said. “I saw him out here yesterday in practice; he was talking, he was moving well, he was fluid, he was attacking in transition.”

“Kennan Evans has to be the leader of this team in order for them to get a share, or potentially win outright the Big 12 title,” Williams added.

Following its Saturday showdown with Kansas, Texas Tech will have just two games remaining on its regular season slate against No. 21 West Virginia and a TCU team riding a two-game winning streak.

Depending on how Evans performs, Texas Tech can either enter that final week with an opportunity to secure the Big 12 title, or amid a slump at a point in the season in which teams would ideally be at their peak form.

Evans and the Red Raiders will host the Jayhawks on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. ET.
