ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg makes big statement about Dan Mullen landing at Florida

Dan Mullen finds himself back at Florida as the Gators’ coach after serving as an offensive coordinator at the school from 2005-08.

To ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Mullen navigated his situation perfectly.

In a piece that highlights takeaways from the most recent coaching carousel, Rittenberg is complimentary of how the former Mississippi State coach landed in Gainesville. Check out how Rittenberg describes Mullen’s situation under the heading, “Dan Mullen perfectly played an important coaching carousel.”

This felt like the year Mullen had to make a move, especially with so many attractive jobs available. But Mullen never seemed desperate to leave Mississippi State, mindful of the talented team he would have in 2018 and the unprecedented SEC-urity he enjoyed at a self-aware program with realistic expectations. He likely would have been Tennessee’s top choice but wisely waited out Florida — the job he wanted all along — as the Gators flirted with Kelly and Frost before turning their focus to him. Mullen makes sense at Florida, where he’s won before as an assistant, and may be exactly what a quarterback-challenged roster needs right now. Still, he had one winning SEC record in nine seasons at Mississippi State. Florida made a really good hire, but Mullen is the biggest winner here.

It’s rather bold to call Mullen “the biggest winner” in his dance with Florida, but there’s something to that point. His connection to the Gators’ program makes him an obvious fit, and he’s aware of the demands that come with the job. He’ll need that perspective as he moves forward in the position.

Sure, the Gators were interested in Chip Kelly and Scott Frost before officials at Florida set their sights on Mullen. But Mullen has a chance to make a splash at his new home.
