Duke-Pittsburgh preview, keys to the game
After a 4-0 start, there was hope that the Duke Blue Devils would be a team that would be at lease on the fringe of the ACC Coastal race, if not in the middle of the pack. However, they have found themselves sunken to the bottom of the division thanks to a three-game losing streak.
Last Saturday, the Blue Devils fell 17-10 to a Florida State team shaken by numerous injuries. Daniel Jones was OK, but not great in the game against the Seminoles (22 for 35, 204 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions). That was an upgrade as opposed to his poor showing at Virginia (14 for 42, 124 yards, 1 touchdown, 2 interceptions).
Jones has been fairly inconsistent throughout the season, but has shown flashes of strong play. Against Northwestern on September 9, he threw for 305 yards and 2 touchdowns as part of a 29 for 45 day, adding 108 yards and 2 more touchdowns on the ground. But Duke coach David Cutcliffe has mentioned that he wants to see more from his quarterback play, and Jones will need to deliver to help get his team back in the win column.
One area that the Blue Devils have struggled in lately is running the ball. Duke began the year with three straight 200-plus yard rushing games. During their three game losing streak, they have run for 183, 131 and 111. Outside of a 176-yard performance against Baylor, leading rusher Shaun Wilson has been a non-factor. Freshman RB Brittain Brown broke the 100-yard plateau against FCS NC Central in the season opener but has not gotten there since.
Meanwhile, Pitt is a team that has struggled as well, but even moreso than Duke. The Panthers are 2-5 with their only wins coming against FCS Youngstown State (by a touchdown) and a blowout victory against lowly Rice. Ben DiNucci will get the start for the Panthers after Max Browne needed surgery on his shoulder. DiNucci went 19 for 32 for 170 yards while recording 1 touchdown and 1 interception during a loss against NC State last Saturday. His career high in yardage was set against Oklahoma State, where he threw for 228 yards on 13 for 25 passing.
Pitt leads the all-time series against Duke 12-9, with the Blue Devils currently in the midst of a two-game losing streak to the Panthers. In last year’s game in Pittsburgh, the Panthers raced to a 56-14 win as they held Duke to just 25 rushing yards and sacked Jones 5 times. John Conner scored twice and recorded 14 carries for 101 yards, while Nathan Peterman threw for 3 touchdowns. Pitt was also helped by its ability to extend drives as it finished 9 of 13 on third downs versus Duke’s 4 of 14 mark.
