Deontai Williams commits to Nebraska: Huskers land JUCO defensive back

Deontai Williams became the 12th commitment of Nebraska’s 2018 recruiting class Sunday, announcing his commitment to the Huskers on Twitter following his official visit over the weekend.

Williams had been committed to Florida for nearly six months before de-committing on Dec. 7. From there, the Jones County Junior College (Ellisville, Miss.) safety quickly scheduled an official visit to Nebraska for this weekend. The visit went well enough that Williams decided to commit.

Heading into the weekend, it appeared the Huskers had picked up significant traction with Williams. Even while Jones was committed to Florida, the Huskers staff continued to recruit him while it was at UCF. The transition to Nebraska and Williams’ subsequent de-commitment only added fuel to the fire.

Before committing to Florida, Williams was a one-time Georgia commit, but the Bulldogs did not send him a letter of intent on National Signing Day in 2015.

Williams is expected to have three seasons of eligibility and his junior college defensive coordinator, Dwike Wilson, believes he can play any secondary position, including all three corner spots.

“He is a very explosive football player,” Wilson told Mike Schaefer of 247Sports last week. “He’s very physical, a violent player. A lot of defensive backs can do a lot of things, but he’s the only one I know that can just hit everybody really hard. He’s got good cover skills, he plays hard and he plays with passion.

“He wants to get right out there. … He understands about getting in the weight room and all that. He just thinks it’s a great opportunity. Everybody there is in the same situation. There might be upperclassmen, but everyone is on even ground with the new staff.”

Williams is the second safety commit the Huskers have picked up in the past week; 4-star C.J. Smith pledged to Nebraska last Sunday after his official visit.

Williams is from Jacksonville, Fla., and attended Trinity Christian Academy for high school. He was the No. 2 junior college safety in the class, according to the 247Sports composite.
