Question of the Day: Monday, Feb. 26
There are many LSU players at the NFL scouting combine, which gets underway this week in Indianapolis. Ten of them, to be exact, which ties the Tigers with Georgia for the third-most players at the event. Only Alabama and Ohio State have more players for scouts to look over.
But even with that many players at the combine, several notables didn’t get invited.
Which LSU player who wasn’t invited to the NFL combine is the biggest snub?
There are four players who jump out as potential NFL prospects who will have to turn heads at LSU’s pro day. They are wide receiver Russell Gage and defensive linemen Christian LaCouture, Greg Gilmore and Frank Herron.
The absence of LSU defensive linemen at the combine is surprising, but NFL draft expert Mike Detillier told SEC Country that none sticks out more than Gilmore.
Gilmore is a 6-foot-4, 311-pound nose tackle. Those guys don’t exactly grow on trees, mostly because the branch would collapse.
“If you look at the jump from junior to senior year, he made as big a move as anybody,” Detillier said. “He came in as big-time recruit as an edge guy. That’s not what he is. He’s a bulky guy in the middle. Look at the push he got. He did really well for a guy that’s a nose guard in getting to the quarterback.”
Gilmore had 53 tackles and a team-high 7 1/2 sacks as a senior. For a nose tackle to lead a team in sacks isn’t unheard of, but it’s certainly an unusual feat — particularly on a team with an edge rusher as feared as Arden Key.
Gilmore and LaCouture both went to the Senior Bowl, but neither received an invite to the combine.
“I’m surprised he didn’t go, I really am,” Detillier said. “You don’t have a ton of [nose tackles] that can play that well. And he’s made a big jump.”
LSU’s pro day — Gilmore’s next great opportunity — is April 4.
