Defensive coordinator Phil Bennett announces he will not return to Arizona State

Arizona State hired Herm Edwards as its head coach with the intention of retaining the existing coaching staff that once surrounded Todd Graham.

That isn’t exactly going to happen after Tuesday’s announcement from defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, who said he will not be returning to Arizona State to coach under Edwards.

Under Bennett in 2017, Arizona State finished 107th in the NCAA in total yards allowed, but 88th in points allowed per game (31.3). His team’s best performance came in a massive upset win over Washington, in which the defense held the Huskies to just 7 points in a thrilling victory.

2017 was Bennett’s only season in Tempe. He spent the previous 6 seasons at Baylor before moving to Arizona State.

Edwards was not available for comment on the news, but the university released this statement on the matter ( via CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee):
