Defensive coordinator David Gibbs gets new contract at Texas Tech

David Gibbs is officially staying at Texas Tech as a defensive coordinator.

But it’s going to cost the Red Raiders.

Gibbs has signed a two-year contract with Texas Tech worth $650,000 a year, according to a release from the school. All week, his name had been floated around as a possible candidate for the defensive coordinator job at Arizona State under new head coach Herm Edwards, as Gibbs coached under Edwards in the NFL.  Those talks dried up this morning.

“We are fortunate to have one of the top defensive coordinators in the country in Coach Gibbs,” Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury said according to the release. “Since the conclusion of the regular season, finalizing this new contract to keep Coach Gibbs at Texas Tech has been a priority for myself and Kirby (Hocutt). We look forward to continuing to build one of the nation’s top defenses in the years to come under Coach Gibbs.”

Gibbs has been in Lubbock since 2015. His defense was near the bottom of the country in the first two years of his tenure, but made massive strides in 2017.
