A flip, a 5-star and a couple surprise visitors for Florida

Dan Mullen delivered results in his first recruiting weekend as the new Florida coach.

The Gators hosted seven official visitors, including UF commits Chris Bleich, Amari Burney, Dante Lang, Dameon Pierce and Randy Russell, whose mother was blown away by the trip.

“I loved it. They gave us royal treatment,” said Russell’s mother, Keisha Carnegie. “The [previous] visits were good, but this one was just over the top. I truly enjoyed it. I felt like I was a millionaire.”

All five future Gators plan to sign with Florida next week and enroll early. Mullen also added to the commitment list by flipping Mississippi State commit Evan McPherson, who is ranked the nation’s No. 2 kicker in the 247Sports Composite.

McPherson pledged to the Bulldogs last spring and received an offer from Florida in late November. He was planning to officially visit both schools this month and then make a final decision, but the trip to UF this weekend won him over.

The Gators will likely lose junior kicker Eddy Piniero to the NFL, so getting McPherson on board is big for Mullen. He also had a trio of top offensive linemen on campus Saturday, including 5-star recruit Jamaree Salyer.

The nation’s No. 1 offensive guard, who will announce his commitment on Dec. 20, was the seventh official visitor. Salyer never checked out Florida during the fall, but decided to give the Gators some late consideration with the coaching changes.

A pair of 4-star offensive tackles — Florida commit Richard Gouraige and Florida State commit Christian Meadows — made unofficial visitors to UF this weekend. The Gators are battling Auburn right now for Gouraige, while Meadows is looking around following Jimbo Fisher’s exit at FSU.

Florida assistants Brad Davis and John Hevesy have been in contact with Gouraige and Meadows, and both recruits are expected to return for official visits in January. With just two commits at the position, offensive line is one of the top remaining needs for Mullen.
