Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith’s strong college career saw him selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2nd round of the 2016 NFL Draft, despite tearing both the ACL and MCL in his left knee during the 2016 Fiesta Bowl.
Although he did not see the field for the entirety of what would have been his rookie season, Jones focused on his recovery. Dallas’s gamble appears to have paid off as he has recorded a team-high 76 tackles in 2017.
It’s certainly caught the attention of the Cowboys front office.
During a Twitter Q&A on Friday, team president Stephen Jones was asked about the player that has exceeded his expectations the most in 2017. Jones responded by mentioning Smith, pointing out his contributions to the team and his recovery from his left leg injury.

Smith’s professional career has gotten off to a great start despite the setback he suffered in college. If he continues his upward trend over the next few years, it looks as if he can become one of the better linebackers in the NFL.
