Clemson QB pledge Trevor Lawrence eclipses DeShaun Watson

In the event you weren’t paying much attention to the events that unfolded on Friday night, the state of Georgia has a new record holder for career high school passing yardage.

Clemson quarterback commit Trevor Lawrence threw for 294 yards and 4 touchdowns in Cartersville’s 62-0 thrashing of Chapel Hill (Ga.), but the first touchdown meant the most. He entered the game needing 117 yards to break the record set by former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, who established the mark while starring for Gainesville High from 2010-13.

As he has in nearly all of Cartersville’s previous games, Lawrence didn’t take the field after the first half because his team already had the game well in hand.

News from high school football games tends not to travel as quickly as in higher levels of the sport, but word that Lawrence had passed Watson began trickling around. And understandably, congratulations came pouring in.

Even Watson, who saw his record fall, took the time out to pass the torch to the future Clemson quarterback.

Lawrence now has 13,255 career passing yards — and he needs just one touchdown pass to tie Watson’s career mark in that category. So that should fall quickly in Cartersville’s next game.

Some other notable performances from Clemson commits:

WR Derion Kendrick scored twice for South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.) in a 61-3 demolition of Richland Northeast (Columbia, S.C.), one on the ground and one through the air. He also threw a pick.

CB Kyler McMichael scored three touchdowns for Greater Atlanta Christian (Norcross, Ga.) in its 56-6 win against North Hall (Ga.).

Auburn commit to make official visit to Clemson

Asa Martin might’ve committed to Auburn back on Aug. 24, but he’s still doing his due diligence and taking advantage of at least some of the official visits that recruits are allotted.

Per Jeffrey Lee of Auburn’s Rivals site, Martin will take four official visits: first to Clemson on Nov. 17, then to Auburn, Alabama and Florida Atlantic in the weeks after that. Martin, a 4-star running back from Austin (Decatur, Ala.) originally committed to Auburn over Alabama and Clemson.

Clemson fans shouldn’t get their hopes up too much, because Martin’s mind is still pretty heavily set on Auburn.

“It will take a lot to change my mind,” Martin told Lee. “But I am going to take my visits.”
