Recruiting trail red-hot for Clemson during weekend

It’s been a couple of days since the last notebook, but a ton has happened since then.

The most important development — by far — was lineman Jordan McFadden’s commitment Saturday night. He became Clemson’s 12th member of the 2018 recruiting class, giving the Tigers the 12th-ranked class in the nation, according to 247Sports.

McFadden’s commitment is important for a few reasons, the biggest of which is that he gives Clemson its first lineman in the class. The Tigers had done well to snatch up recruits in most of their other positions of need but beefing up the line has been a big priority, and it still is.

It was only a matter of time until McFadden flipped from Virginia Tech to Clemson after the Tigers extended an offer, but major props to him for not immediately leaving and handling the process with grace. McFadden suffered a knee injury, knocking him out of the Shrine Bowl, but he’ll be a summer enrollee and should be ready by camp.

Visits, offers and finalists

Dabo Swinney and his staff are in the center of their tour of visits. They stopped by the state of Florida on Friday to see commits Xavier Thomas, Mike Jones and top uncommitted corner Brendan “Bookie” Radley-Hiles.

Speaking of Radley-Hiles, the 4-star corner received another offer Sunday, this one from Florida State and newly hired coach Willie Taggart.

Another top target, 5-star lineman Jackson Carman, also partook in his official visit to Clemson over the weekend. He’s down to Ohio State (his in-state school) and USC, along with the Tigers.

In other news, one of Clemson’s targets in the Class of 2019 released a pared-down group of finalists Sunday afternoon, and the Tigers made the cut there.

Curtis Fann revealed a list of 4 schools in contention for the 4-star defensive end, and Clemson is going to have to fend off a trio of SEC programs in Auburn, Florida and in-state South Carolina.

One of Clemson’s two commitments already in the fold for that class, safety Joseph Charleston, made sure he let Fann know where his priorities should lie.
