Clay Travis has an opinion about the largest key to success for Jeremy Pruitt at Tennessee.
On Tuesday, the Outkick the Coverage analyst appeared on WJOX 94.5 FM and spoke about Pruitt’s hire as the Volunteers’ new coach after Travis was a vocal voice during the Greg Schiano fallout at Tennessee. During the interview, Travis said Pruitt’s offensive hires will be crucial to the coach’s success in Knoxville. Pruitt arrives at Tennessee with a heavy defensive background, having worked as a defensive coordinator at Florida State, Georgia and Alabama.
Check out part of Travis’ thought:
“I think he’s better than Schiano, first of all, and they’re getting him for a lower cost. So that’s always a good combo. I think the bigger question, frankly, here is this: Who are they going to get on the offensive side of the ball? And I think most people out there would have to say Jeremy Pruitt has, obviously, done a very good job at Alabama, at Florida State and at Georgia. … The defense is going to be pretty good at Tennessee, probably a top 20-caliber defense once he kind of gets a couple years to recruit there. I think the question in terms of his success is going to become, ‘How good can his offensive side of the ball be, and who does he entrust to manage the success of that?'”
That’s a smart question from Travis, and the answers will go a long way in determining if the Volunteers can become a factor in the SEC.
Travis went on to mention that Pruitt’s choice at offensive coordinator will make the difference between the coach becoming a Kirby Smart-like hire or a Will Muschamp-like one. Of course, both Smart and Muschamp are Nick Saban disciples like Pruitt. However, Smart has emerged as one of the country’s most impressive coaches after leading Georgia to an SEC title this year.
