Ohio State’s Chris Holtmann and Purdue’s Matt Painter have done masterful jobs at their respective programs this season, and the national college basketball audience has taken notice.

Holtmann and Painter are two of 10 semifinalists for the Werner Ladder Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year, which the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Friday morning.

In his first season in Columbus, Ohio, Holtmann has the Buckeyes (23-7 overall, 14-3 Big Ten) in second place of the league standings, one game behind Michigan State. They’re ranked 16th in the AP Top 25, while mock brackets have them pegged anywhere between a No. 3 seed and a No. 5 seed for the NCAA Tournament.

These are just some of the accomplishments for a team picked to finish 11th in the Big Ten preseason poll.

Purdue entered the year with higher expectations, ranking 20th in the preseason AP Top 25, but not many people viewed Painter’s team as a national title contender.

Well, that’s what the Boilermakers (25-5, 14-3) have become. They’ve spent much of the year in the top 10 and will likely earn a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Joining Holtmann and Painter in the national Coach of the Year race are Tony Bennett (Virginia), Jay Wright (Villanova), Chris Mack (Xavier), Mick Cronin (Cincinnati) , Chris Beard (Texas Tech), Bruce Pearl (Auburn), Brad Brownell (Clemson) and Chris Beard (Texas Tech).

Four finalists will be announced March 15, while the winner will be recognized during the Naismith Awards brunch on April 1.
