TCU is in control of its own fate in the hunt for a spot in the College Football Playoff, according to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd.
The Horned Frogs are No. 5 in this week’s power rankings from CBS Sports, and they appear to be within striking distance of the playoff field. They’re one of only nine undefeated Power 5 teams remaining. Dodd said TCU needs to win out to avoid elimination, but if the Frogs do that, they’ll certainly be assured a spot.
The Big 12’s best playoff hope outlasted a plucky West Virginia, 31-24. The Frogs control their own playoff destiny. There’s a long way to go. TCU still has to play Kansas State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.
TCU’s remaining schedule doesn’t appear to be as daunting as some other unbeaten squads, though. Penn State still has to face Ohio State (5-1) and Michigan (4-1), plus a possible Big Ten title matchup with Wisconsin (5-0). Georgia and Alabama will likely face one another in the SEC Championship Game, and they both still have to play Auburn (5-1).
Clemson and Miami (Fla.) are currently on course to meet in the ACC title game. Meanwhile, Washington and Washington State must face off in the Apple Cup, and then whoever wins will still have to make it through the Pac-12 title game unscathed.
The odds of all the other Power 5 conferences having undefeated champions is extraordinarily slim. Getting to that point won’t be easy for TCU either, especially with the reinstated Big 12 Championship Game. But an unbeaten Big 12 champion TCU would be a virtual lock for the playoff.
