It’s no secret that the NFL and college football are two vastly different styles of the same game, and draft experts are trying to guess whether Baker Mayfield will adapt to the pros.
Obviously, the former Oklahoma quarterback dominated the college game. He won a Heisman Trophy, took Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff twice and set NCAA records in passer efficiency rating.
So while Mayfield might not be the No.1 pick — and may not even go in the Top 10 — of the real NFL draft, there’s no question he’d be the hypothetical first selection in a draft based solely on collegiate production. CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli imagined what that draft might look like, with Mayfield going to the Cleveland Browns at No. 1.
“Mayfield won the Heisman in 2017 and had one of the greatest college careers of all time,” Fornelli wrote. “His passer efficiency ratings in 2016 (196.4) and 2017 (198.9) are the greatest of all time.”
College production does not always translate to professional success — just ask Ryan Leaf. And plenty of experts have cast doubts on Mayfield’s future as an NFL quarterback, despite his legendary career with the Sooners.
But while statistics aren’t everything, they can tell us quite a bit. And in the case of Baker Mayfield, the statistics show that he has the potential to play quarterback better than almost anyone in the 2018 Draft.
