A pair of Iowa State freshmen had stellar stretches last week, and Cameron Lard and Lindell Wigginton both received their justified recognition.
Lard was named CBS Sports’ Freshman of the Week for the week of Feb. 4-10. Wigginton came in second place behind his teammate.
In two games against two ranked opponents, Texas Tech and Oklahoma, Lard averaged 20.5 points and 11.o rebounds on 60.7 percent shooting. He had 19 points and 17 rebounds against the Red Raiders and shot 10-11 against the Sooners.
“The 6-9 Lard is a load in the frontcourt,” CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander wrote. “He’s been on the fringe of the fringe of the Frosh Watch for most of this season. In talking to multiple Big 12 coaches over the past week, the sense is that Lard is a fledgling talent who’s raw, physical basketball ability makes him a top-four player on the court in any game he plays in.”
Wigginton wasn’t far behind Lard in production. He set the Iowa State freshman record for 20-point games in a season (9) against Oklahoma and averaged 19.5 points over the course of the week.
The Cyclones have a bright future ahead of them with Wigginton and Lard leading the way. For now, they’re just playing the role of thorns in the side of other Big 12 teams.
