Cal-Arizona keys to the game:
Make Tate win with his arm
Arizona’s success of late is almost entirely due to the breakout performance of Tate over the past couple of weeks. Not only is Tate becoming a one man wrecking crew, he’s beginning to remind people of former Rich Rodriguez disciple Pat White at West Virginia.
However, Tate has only thrown 35 passes this season, though he’s completed 74.3 percent of those throws. In other words, Tate is a runner. He’s going to run the ball and then run it again. Cal needs to sell out against the run and force Tate into third-and-long situations in which he will be forced to throw it.
Run the Football, Control the Clock
With Tate running the show for the Wildcats, they’re going to keep the ball on the ground and control the clock. However, the Bears have a decent running attack of their own and will need to use it on Saturday night.
The Bears have two ways to win: Keep Tate off the field or force Tate and the Wildcats into turnovers. If the Bears can get one of those goals accomplished, they have a shot. If they do both, Cal should come away with a win.
Win the Turnover Battle
Cal forced Washington State and Luke Falk into 7 turnovers last Friday night and lead the conference with 20 total takeaways. That is a huge number and the Bears hope they can force even more on Saturday.
Cal’s offense has also turned the ball over 14 times this season, which isn’t ideal. The Bears are going to need for QB Ross Bowers to make smart decisions with the football.
