Penn State football is the No. 1 topic in We are… Awake every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across Nittany Lions sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Penn State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Film study

Highlight tapes are fun. They are even more fun when you can watch clips of Penn State running back Saquon Barkley.

StateCollege.com’s Ben Jones came across two pieces of Barkley film, that are worth a look.

How many more highlights will Barkley provide before he bolts to the NFL?

Speaking of, ESPN’s Todd McShay provided his first mock draft. McShay has Barkley headed to Cleveland with the No. 6 pick. For what it’s worth, McShay has Cleveland cashing in on both of its first-round picks with USC quarterback Sam Darnold at No. 1 and Barkley a few picks later.

One has to ask, albeit tongue in cheek, if Cleveland wants Barkley that bad, might he stick around for his senior season?

Barkley also picked up another All-America honor on Wednesday, per the Allentown Morning Call.

Time well spent

DaeSean Hamilton will leave Penn State after the Dec. 30th Fiesta Bowl against Washington. But he will leave the Nittany Lions program after making the most of his time spent in Happy Valley, writes Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Hamilton is the all-time leader in receptions at Penn State  with 209 and counting entering the Fiesta Bowl. Hamilton blew past Deon Butler’s record of 179 receptions on Sept. 30th with a grab against Indiana.

Walking on

Penn State will need to figure out its kicking game for 2018, and they may have found the missing piece to that puzzle.

St. John’s College kicker Rafael Checa pledged to walk on and play for James Franklin’s team beginning next season, writes Sean Fitz of Lions247.

According to Fitz, Checa chose Penn State because he is a “big fan of the coaching staff,” and is the No. 3 ranked kicker in the country.

Even more All-Americans

The Penn State women’s volleyball team is also racking up the national recognition, landing three players on American Volleyball Coaches’ Association All-America team, writes Gordon Brunskill of the Centre Daily Times.

The Nittany Lions are in the NCAA semifinals on Thursday night against Nebraska.
