If TCU makes it through the Big 12 undefeated, there’s no question whether the Horned Frogs should make the College Football Playoff. Where they’ll be ranked in it, though, is up for debate.
The latest bowl projects from Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller have TCU as the No. 4 seed in the playoff, behind other undefeated teams Alabama, Georgia and Penn State. Although this is all subject to change, one line from Miller stood out regarding his reasoning for having the Frogs behind Penn State.
“There’s no question that an undefeated Big Ten champ would rank ahead of an undefeated Big 12 champ,” Miller wrote, “so let’s just move the Nittany Lions ahead of the Horned Frogs now.”
To say there’s “no question” doesn’t make sense. It was only last month when Oklahoma, one of the top three teams in the Big 12, beat Ohio State, one of the top three teams in the Big Ten. And it wasn’t close; the Sooners won comfortably, 31-16, on the road.
To be undefeated, TCU would have to beat that Oklahoma team. The Horned Frogs might have to do it twice, given the return of the Big 12 Championship Game. If not the Sooners, it could be Oklahoma State or West Virginia, two teams with explosive offenses, TCU has to beat two times.
The Nittany Lions will have to overcome hurdles to remain undefeated. After an impressive showing against Michigan, Penn State has to go on the road against Ohio State and do the same to face Michigan State. Making it through that trio unbeaten will certainly sway the Playoff committee
Making it through that trio unbeaten will certainly sway the Playoff committee in Penn State’s favor. But TCU has to go on the road to face Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech, which will each prove formidable in their own way.
If Penn State makes it through the Big Ten unscathed and TCU does the same in the Big 12, it’s certainly possible the Nittany Lions are ahead of the Horned Frogs in the final Playoff rankings. But the committee will have to tackle more than no questions to make that decision.
