With the official release of the American Football Coaches Association All-America teams, players around the country have earned unanimous All-American status. The Big 12 leads the way.
The conference has six of the 14 unanimous All-Americans. Alone, Oklahoma’s three unanimous All-Americans match the next closest conference, the Big Ten.
The SEC is next with two, while the Pac-12 and ACC have one each. Independent Notre Dame’s Quenton Nelson was the 14th unanimous All-American.
To be a unanimous All-American, a player must make the All-America first team on the Associated Press, Sporting News, Walter Camp Football Foundation, Football Writers Association of America and AFCA lists. Here’s a quick look at the Big 12’s six unanimous All-Americans.
Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield
It only makes sense the Heisman Trophy winner is a unanimous All-American. Mayfield has led the Sooners to a 12-1 record, a third straight Big 12 title and the College Football Playoff. Mayfield is on pace to set a single-season record for pass efficiency, a record he set last year.
Oklahoma TE Mark Andrews
Andrews became the Sooners’ first Mackey Award winner for college football’s best tight end. Andrews has 906 receiving yards with 8 touchdown catches heading into Oklahoma’s matchup with Georgia in the Rose Bowl.
Oklahoma OL Orlando Brown
Brown has played a critical role in one of the nation’s best offensive lines. Mayfield is the most important Sooner, and protecting him is Oklahoma’s priority. The Sooners can’t do it without Brown. With three unanimous All-Americans this year, Oklahoma has 35 in its history, more than any other program.
Oklahoma State WR James Washington
Washington became Oklahoma State’s third Biletnikoff Award winner since 2010 with an outstanding season. He is the Cowboys’ first unanimous All-American since 2011, when Justin Blackmon, who also won the Biletnikoff Award, received the honor. Washington leads the FBS in receiving yards and averages more than 20 yards a catch.
Texas S DeShon Elliott
Elliott was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award for the nation’s top defensive back. In his first season as a starter, Elliott recorded 6 interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns.
Texas P Michael Dickson
As the best punter in the country, Dickson won the Ray Guy Award. He leads the country with a per-punt average of 48.4 yards on his 73 attempts.
