Quarterback play has long been the standout trait of the Big 12. The same holds true in 2017.
Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph and West Virginia’s Will Grier were among the top 10 college quarterback’s in NFL.com’s latest power rankings for the position. The site had five of its draft experts rank quarterbacks 1-10, with point values assigned to each ranking. The points are then totaled for the final rankings.
Mayfield was ranked third behind Louisville’s Lamar Jackson and UCLA’s Josh Rosen. Although Mayfield’s potential as an NFL starter has often been questioned, he’s clearly impressed NFL.com. Mayfield, the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, started the year at No. 7 in the power rankings. He received 41 points, one behind Rosen and two behind Jackson.
Rudolph came in at No. 5, three spots ahead of Grier at No. 8. The two will share a field this weekend as the Cowboys travel to West Virginia. A victory in the duel between highly touted quarterbacks could see either rising up the list.
Regardless, it’s clear the Big 12 is deep when it comes to having talented quarterbacks. The Big 12 and Pac-12 were the only conferences with multiple quarterbacks in the power rankings.
