Big 12’s best moments of 2017: Kansas stares down Baker Mayfield

DieHards is counting down each Big 12 team’s best moment from the 2017 college football season, whether fun, momentous or disastrous. We start with the Kansas Jayhawks.

It’s difficult to find many positives the last few years at Kansas. The football team has just three wins in the last three seasons. But at least this season, Kansas players finally decided to stand up for themselves.

While going against the vaunted Oklahoma Sooners on Nov. 18, Kansas players refused to shake hands with the opposing captains. It was the first time all season a team really stood up to the eventual Heisman Trophy winner. The moment, along with a few others, really got under Mayfield’s skin and helped lead to one of his most controversial moments of the season — making profane gestures and yelling profanities to the Kansas sideline — a move that cost him his captaincy in his final home game.

The Sooners destroyed Kansas 41-3, but the Jayhawks actually played pretty well defensively. Kansas held the Sooners to 469 yards, well under their 583.3-yards average. Dorance Armstrong and Daniel Wise shared a sack of Mayfield, and the Jayhawks managed 6 tackles for loss against the strong Oklahoma offensive line.

Eventually, Kansas-Oklahoma became one of the games of that weekend, and everyone was talking about Mayfield losing his cool on the sideline. Jayhawks coach David Beaty punished his team for the spurned handshakes, but it was the first time in a while we’ve seen some fight from Kansas when facing one of the sport’s best players.

Kansas still needs to grow dramatically as a program, but the Jayhawks took on a challenge and played well. Even though the Jayhawks don’t have an impressive win to sell — as they did last season against Texas — Beaty’s team is starting to find some swagger.

Make sure and keep tuned to DieHards for the best moment for every Big 12 team in the coming days.
