Big 12 basketball regresses in latest AP Top 25 poll

On Monday, the latest AP Top 25 released and much of the Big 12 is headed in the wrong direction.

Texas Tech is once again the top-ranked Big 12 member, staying at No. 7 after cruising past Iowa State and Kansas State by a combined 37 points. The Red Raiders are now 21-4 on the season and headline the Big 12 at 9-3 in league play.

Texas Tech will host Oklahoma on Tuesday.

After spending last week ranked No. 10 nationally, the Kansas Jayhawks took a slight step backwards to No. 13 just days after falling on the road against Baylor, 80-64. The loss marked the Jayhawks’ second in the last three games, placing Kansas at 19-6 (8-4 Big 12) entering the final stretch.

Kansas will aim to redeem its most recent performance on Tuesday against Iowa State.

Oklahoma, on the other hand, has fallen to No. 23 in the country. Last week, the Sooners were found at No. 17, but Lon Kruger’s club continued to struggle, dropping back-to-back games against West Virginia and Iowa State for a 16-8 (6-6) record.

The Sooners have now lost three straight and six of their last eight with a road meeting against a surging Texas Tech team looming on Tuesday.

West Virginia is suffering through a similar slump, but the Mountaineers fell only one spot to No. 20.

The Mountaineers topped Oklahoma last week, but then fell at home against Oklahoma State, 88-85. The loss gave West Virginia its sixth defeat in the last nine games. After the Mountaineers enjoyed a 15-1 start earlier in the season, West Virginia is now 18-7 on the season and 7-5 in Big 12 play.

Collectively, with only a handful of regular season games remaining, the gauntlet that is Big 12 play is beginning to plague many of the league’s powers in the loss column.
