Iowa football is always the main topic in Iowa Breakfast Club, Land of 10’s daily Hawkeyes notebook — but we cover news, notes and analysis across Hawkeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Iowa football, recruiting, basketball and more.

C.J. Beathard draws high praise in first start

Former Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard impressed in his first NFL start on Sunday for the San Francisco 49ers. You don’t need to look at his stats (28 of 35 for 235 passing yards) or know he scored his first rushing touchdown to realize his play against the Dallas Cowboys was eye-opening. The way FOX analyst Troy Aikman praised him — mentioning Beathard in the same sentence as Joe Montana — let’s you know it.

Not winning the close games

The Hawkeyes have lost three of their last four games by a combined 16 points. Why can’t Iowa win close Big Ten games? Marc Morehouse of the Cedar Rapids Gazette tries to find the answer.

Injury report

The injuries are piling up for the Hawkeyes. Land of 10 recaps them all and the impact it has at linebacker, offensive line and in the secondary.

Changing the narrative

The first half of the season didn’t go how cornerback Manny Rugamba wanted. He didn’t play up to his standards. He missed time with an ankle sprain. He returned to the starting lineup against Minnesota, played better, and told Mark Emmert of the Des Moines Register he wants the end of his season to be different from the start.

Never too early for projections

Yes, Iowa is coming off a loss, but the Hawkeyes are still in line to make a bowl game. Land of 10  is projecting them to head to a bowl game in California.

Free falling

Following the 17-10 overtime loss to Northwestern the Hawkeyes fell a spot to No. 7 in the latest Land of 10 Big Ten Power Poll released on Sunday. The Wildcats moved up to No. 6.
