In an interview with Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated, Bakery Mayfield opened up about what he expects at Bedlam.
“What to expect in Bedlam? I expect my mugshot to be everywhere,” Mayfield said. “Quite frankly, I would be a little disappointed if they didn’t do it. I am expecting there to be a lot of trash talk.”
This trash talk will be exacerbated by the Oklahoma State stadium, which places the fans intensely close to the benches on the sideline.
Baker Mayfield is brash and bold, and it seems like he’s fueled by the disrespect.
If Oklahoma State wants to really get under his skin, they should start complimenting him. Tell him what an inspiration he is, and how well he uses the First Amendment. Tell Mayfield that you like his mustache, get him to sign your Oklahoma State memorabilia.
He clearly thrives off the hate he gets, and plays better when he’s disrespected. No one’s tried over respected him to the point of obnoxiousness yet. It’s a unique approach, but it might just work.
Nothing else has.
