Baker Mayfield still a Heisman candidate according to USA TODAY survey

According to USA TODAY’s Heisman survey, Baker Mayfield is still a strong candidate for the award.

Mayfield has fallen into third behind Penn State’s Saquon Barkley and Stanford’s Bryce Love, but is still comfortably in third place.

Mayfield is not the only Big 12 player noticed in the survey, Iowa State’s Joel Lanning received two third-place nods.

Oklahoma lost to Iowa State last Saturday, a loss that would’ve crippled them had we still been under the BCS. However, we’re in the era of the College Football Playoff now, and the impact of the loss will be diminished if Iowa State goes to a bowl game and Oklahoma wins out.

It’s possible to still win the Big 12 with a loss, and it’s possible to get into the playoff with a loss. Oklahoma did it in 2015, with a loss to a 5-7 Texas team.

The Sooners aren’t out of anything, and no individual Sooner is out of any individual award. There’s a lot of football left to play, and a lot of yards and touchdowns left to be scored. It’s too early to count anyone out for any award, provided that that team wins out the rest of their games.
