The Heisman hump has been very real for Baker Mayfield, and that may prove to be true once again in 2017.
The Oklahoma Sooners senior gunslinger finished at No. 3 and No. 4 in the Heisman voting in 2016 and 2015, respectively, and now with just a handful of games remaining on 2017’s regular season slate, Mayfield is expected to see a similar finish.
Just as he was last week following Oklahoma’s Red River Showdown win over Texas, Mayfield remains at No. 3 in Sports Illustrated’s ‘Heisman Five,’ in which he still trails a pair of elite ball-carriers in Penn State’s Saquon Barkley and Stanford’s Bryce Love.
“He keeps putting this program on his back and did so again this weekend to rally the Sooners back from two TDs down against Bill Snyder’s fearless Kansas State team. Mayfield went 32 for 41 for a season-high 410 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a season-high 69 yards and two more TDs in a 42–35 win. His touchdown-to-interception ratio is 19–2.”
The good news for Mayfield, though, is after Oklahoma’s Week 9 meeting with Texas Tech, which will cap a six-game stretch of unranked foes, Mayfield will have an ideal opportunity to state his Heisman case with College Football Playoff implications on the line.
On Nov. 4, the Sooners will be on the road for a Bedlam battle with No. 11 Oklahoma State, which houses playoff aspirations of its own. The following week, Oklahoma will be presented with an opportunity for yet another resume-building victory with No. 4 TCU coming to Norman, Okla. Simply due to what’s at stake for all three teams involved, Oklahoma will be under the national microscope throughout the first half of November.
If Mayfield’s ever going to make his most convincing Heisman case, that two-week stretch against the Pokes and Horned Frogs would be the time to do so.
If not, we may be discussing yet another top-five Heisman finish for Mayfield, who would be forced to watch someone else accept the prestigious award yet again.
