Welcome to the Thursday edition of our Oklahoma DieHards morning roundup, where we take you through all the biggest headlines around Oklahoma athletics.

Baker Mayfield loves rivalries

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield sat down with Sports Illustrated writer Bruce Feldman for a Q&A session published Wednesday, and what stood out most was his love of college football rivalries.

Mayfield said some Oklahoma State fans sent him an orange and black glitter bomb during the offseason in a tube that he thought was a picture of his mug shot. He also said that he would be “disappointed” if Cowboys fans didn’t have many pictures of his mugshot at Bedlam.

Mayfield also said it would be “very disappointing” to not beat Texas in his final opportunity. He will have that chance on Saturday in Dallas.

Lincoln Riley preparing for Texas

Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley participated this Big 12 rivalry for the first time in 2015, as the Sooners’ offensive coordinator. He told DieHards John Shinn that there’s nothing like participating in this storied rivalry.

“It’s closer to a bowl game to me than anything else,” Riley said. “I think you’ve gotta have the kids in the right mind frame for it. The right mindset.”

All three of the greatest coaches in Oklahoma history — Bud Wilkinson, Bob Stoops and Barry Switzer — have winning records against Texas. Riley hopes to join the club.

Other headlines from the program:

  • Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb heavily hinted at a return on Twitter. However, Lincoln Riley said Lamb’s status is still in question at this point for the game Saturday.
  • DieHards national film analyst Ollie Connolly broke down the holes in Oklahoma’s defense in its loss to Iowa State last Saturday, and pointed out what the Sooners have to fix before the Red River Showdown this coming Saturday.
  • Baker Mayfield is one of four Big 12 finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which is given to the nation’s best senior quarterback.

Women’s basketball stars earn honor

Oklahoma women’s basketball seniors Maddie Manning and Vionise Pierre-Louis both earned honorable mention to the preseason All-Big 12 team.

Manning averaged 12.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game last season. She earned honorable mention All-Big 12 last season, and also earned another year of eligibility from the Big 12.

Pierre-Louis averaged 11.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game last season. She ranks fourth in program history with 144 blocks.
