Baker Mayfield is the best quarterback available in the 2018 NFL Draft, according to Pro Football Focus’ Sam Monson, and apparently it’s not even that close.
The former Oklahoma quarterback and reigning Heisman winner should be the top quarterback on the board, wrote Monson, “and it isn’t particularly close to the second guy.”
“Every number you choose to focus on puts Mayfield head and shoulders above the rest of the class,” Monson said.
According to PFF, Mayfield had the best passer rating of any quarterback in the class, whether from a clean pocket (143.8) or under pressure (111.6). Mayfield also has the two highest-graded seasons by a quarterback since PFF started grading college players in 2014. His 2016 and 2017 campaigns both rank ahead of the best seasons by former No. 1 overall draft pick Jared Goff and former No. 2 overall pick Marcus Mariota. His 2015 season actually tied the grade for Mariota’s Heisman campaign in 2014.

Those numbers aren’t solely a product of Oklahoma’s spread offense either. Mayfield also had the best grade of any college quarterback on “NFL throws,” according to PFF’s analysis, and only seven quarterbacks in the country had more such pass attempts in 2017.
While some scouts have questioned Mayfield’s maturity and compared him to Johnny Manziel, his on-field production grades out better than any other prospect in the draft:
[I]solating evaluation to his performance on the field, there is no quarterback that can come close to the level of dominance we have seen from Mayfield over his college career, and if that were the only criteria, he would be the No.1 overall pick in April’s draft.
Mayfield is already being talked about as a possibility for the Cleveland Browns with the No. 1 pick, and most of the teams with early first-round picks, including the Broncos and Jets, are reportedly interested in taking him.
The 2018 NFL Draft begins Thursday, April 27, in Arlington, Texas.
