As we approach the mid-point of the 2017 season, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield remains one of college football’s most prolific presences.
Five games into his senior campaign, Mayfield has guided the Sooners to a 4-1 record and a No. 12 ranking nationally. As far as his personal feats are concerned, Mayfield has completed 100 of 134 passes for 1,635 yards and 15 touchdowns, while he’s yet to throw at a single interception. As a result, the Sooners gunslinger headlines the Pro Football Focus All-American Watch list for the nation’s top offensive talents, boasting a 93.5 rating.

As noted, Mayfield’s passer rating of 157.4 when he’s kept clean headlines the entire nation.
At his current pace, Mayfield will conclude the 2017 season with 3,924 passing yards and 36 touchdowns, which would mark a slight regression from his 2016 output of 3,965 yards and 40 scores through the air. Not surprisingly, although he’s not the frontrunner at the moment, Mayfield is a legitimate Hesman candidate for the third consecutive season, courtesy of a career high QBR of 214.4.
As Mayfield recently said, though, “I didn’t come back to win a Heisman, I came back to win a National Title.”
Iowa State threw a wrench into those aspirations last Saturday by escaping Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium with a 38-31, dropping the Sooners from No. 3 to No. 12 in the polls.
Mayfield and the Sooners will have an ideal opportunity to bounce back and take another step towards those aspirations this weekend during the Red River Showdown with Texas (3-2, 2-0).
